Salem Things That Are Related To Math

SOP Day:3 « Rty14's Blog
It was our third day to go to the sarneli center for street children. We had the same rituals as usual by going to the church first to pray then entering the center then after fix the groupings. I had my hands full on that day because a lot of our members were absent. I had to teach four students in different grade levels.
So I first taught the two kids one of them was Salem. Salem did not really understand the math lesson compared to his other friends. To solve this problem I taught the 3 other kids who understood their own math lessons more and after I now taught the group as a whole. Salem really felt lazy on that day to study. My solution was to teach in a form of a game. This made everyone participate more and learn the lesson faster than I expected.

After studying I headed out to the bahay kubo where everyone else were. There I was able to learn a lesson that I would never forget. I was able to talk to a kid along with Brando and Che. Before entering the center he used to be a kid who was a criminal he even pointed out one of the other boys who used to be with him whenever they would steal. He told us that he was jailed a lot of times because of stealing. He used to be a kid stealing things like bags money and cellphones in the area called divisoria. This place is where a lot of people go to buy things at a cheap price. Knowing that a lot of people are in the area with money the kids would choose this area as a place where they could steal. He told us that he would steal cellphones and sell them in exchange for money. The money that they would get would be split up among all the kids who were part of the group. He even taught us how he was able to steal these things through a certain technique.
From this I learned that the causes for these kids to steal was the lack of money. First of all this is a way for them to survive they were not privileged enough to be born in a family where everything was provided. Poverty in our country can really have some bad effects. This kid did not have a bad intention he just needed money to survive and feed his family. There were also some instances where they carried heavy loads of boxes at that time he was about five to six years old just to get food. Something changed the life of that kid when people in the center saw him in the streets sitting down. He was brought to the center along with his two other friends a girl and a guy. The girl got so scared that she stole money form he institution and left while the two others stayed and are now enjoying a better life. I think there are still a lot of kids like this in our country just waiting to be helped.
At times we really have to face these situations and be aware of what is going on in our country. So after talking with the kid we now had to distribute the food that we bought for the kids which was doughnuts and soft drinks. Everyone was happy to eat. This experience really made me know the kids more. I thank God for this opportunity to met these kids. This experience has really changed my life and how I look at it.
